Everyone in Argentina knows the drawing of the Villavicencio hotel: it has been on the mineral water label for decades. This tour goes right there, 50 kilometers from the city, climbing into the Andean foothills. The Villavicencio Nature Reserve protects 62,000 hectares of scrubland and mountains, home to guanacos, foxes and condors. At its heart are the old Gran Hotel, built in the 1940s, and the thermal springs that made the place famous. On the way we stop at the Canota Monument, where San Martín split his columns to cross the Andes, and at the Los Caracoles viewpoint, the series of hairpin bends carved into the hillside that is one of Mendoza's best-known postcards. It's a half-day tour: you're back by midday, so the afternoon is free.
